Vascular Interventional Radiology

Digital subtraction angiography is a fluoroscopic technique used extensively in interventional radiology for visualizing blood vessels. Radio-opaque structures such as bones are eliminated (“subtracted”) digitally from the image, thus allowing for accurate depiction of the blood vessels.

Interventional radiology is useful for diagnostic as well as therapeutic purpose in many conditions of vascular origin. Cerebral, peripheral and non cardiac Angiography procedures are performed by the interventional radiologists in the Cath lab of the Aditya Birla memorial hospital for diagnosing the diseased condition. Interventional radiology also helps in minimal invasive management of many of these serious conditions. An interventional radiologist conducts the initial patient assessment, determine the best course of therapy, and provide care plan after the procedure is completed. The interventional radiologist consults the referring doctor to come up with the best management plan for the patient. Clinical history, physical examination, as well as the laboratory test results and radiology investigations available guide the interventional radiologist to implement the most appropriate management plan, avoid unnecessary procedures, and prevent complications to achieve a successful outcome.

You can be asked to undergo certain laboratory investigations before undertaking the procedure to avoid any complications that may arise because of the co morbidities of the patient. Patient may be advised to withhold certain medications and may be advised to consult the treating doctor of the patient for the same.

We follow the ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) principle while carrying out procedures to ensure minimum required exposure of patients to the radiations. Information about pregnancy or possible pregnancy should be informed to the radiologist before undergoing the procedure.
