Social Responsibility – Be A Donor

BLOOD DONOR

In India, every year we require about 4 Crore units of blood, of which only a meager 40 Lakh units of blood is readily available. Also, more than 1 million new people are diagnosed with cancer each year. Many of whom need blood, sometimes daily during chemotherapy treatment. Donating blood is donating the gift of life.
In line with the National Blood Policy and guidelines by the Maharashtra State Blood Transfusion Council, the department of Transfusion Medicine or Blood Bank at Aditya Birla Hospital is devoted to phasing out Replacement Blood Donation by total Voluntary Blood Donations in a time bound manner as our social commitment to help those in immediate need of blood. The Blood Bank promotes IEC campaigns to increase awareness about voluntary blood donation and its benefits to the community.
About Blood Donation
  •  Donating blood is a safe process. A sterile needle is used only once for each donor and then discarded.
  • Blood donation is a simple four-step process: registration, medical history and mini-physical, donation and refreshments.
  •  Every blood donor is given a free mini-physical, by checking the donor’s temperature, blood pressure, pulse and hemoglobin to ensure
it is safe for the donor to give blood.
  •  The actual blood donation typically takes less than 10-12 minutes. The entire process, from the time you arrive to the time you leave, takes about an hour and 15 min.
  •  The average adult has about 10 units of blood in his body. Roughly 1 unit is given during a donation.
  •  A healthy donor may donate red blood cells every 56 days, or double red cells every 112 days.
  •  A healthy donor may donate platelets as few as 7 days apart, but a maximum of 24 times a year.
  •  All donated blood is tested for HIV, hepatitis B and C, syphilis and other infectious diseases before it can be transfused to patients.

EYES DONOR

Our welfare work is a lifeline for thousands of people and we cannot do it without your help. The Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital facilitates Eyes, Blood and other Organ donation.
Organ and tissue donation and transplant provides a second chance at life for thousands of people each year. By deciding to be a donor, you gift hope … hope for the thousands of individuals awaiting transplants. Organ donation saves lives, so please donate today, every donation makes a difference.
EYE Donation
In India, we have an estimated 4.6 million people with corneal blindness that is curable through corneal transplantation, made possible by eye donation. The sight loss due to the opaque cornea can be restored by replacing the opaque cornea with a clear one.
At Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital we strive to bridge the gap between the availability and requirement, through a joint effort with the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation. We have established the PCMC ADITYA JYOT–a foundation that champions the cause of eye donation. Our continuous efforts in encouraging and assisting with eye donations have resulted in more than hundred people having been restored eyesight since the establishment of PCMC ADITYA JYOT in November, 2007.
Why donate?
  •   2.5 million children are suffering, including those who don’t have the correct spectacles
  • 60% of blind children will not make it to adulthood. A cumulative economic loss to India’s GNP of US$ 11.1 billion
  • 25% live below the poverty line o 32% are under 15
  •  75% live in rural areas
  •  40% live in rural areas in central & northern India where there is little access to quality eye care services
EYE DONATION PLEDGE FORM
I pledge my solemn intention to donate my eyes to PCMC ADITYA JYOT. I hereby declared that after my demise I wish to put into immediate effect by inviting the removal of both eyes upon death for therapeutic transplantation or medical research and education as required

ORGAN DONOR

BE A DONOR

Our welfare work is a lifeline for thousands of people and we cannot do it without your help. The Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital facilitates Eyes, Blood and other Organ donation.
Organ and tissue donation and transplant provides a second chance at life for thousands of people each year. By deciding to be a donor, you gift hope … hope for the thousands of individuals awaiting transplants. Organ donation saves lives, so please donate today, every donation makes a difference.
Organ donation takes healthy organs and tissues from one person for transplantation into another. People of all ages and background can be organ donors. Donating your organs after you die helps save and transform the lives of extremely ill people.
Each year hundreds of people in India die needlessly due to lack of donor availability. So if you want to make a real difference, pledge your organ today. Talk about your donation decision with family and friends. Letting them know what you’ve decided makes it much easier for them to support your decision to be a donor.
About Organ donation

• Q: Who can become a donor?
Virtually anyone can become a donor. Your medical condition at the time of death will determine what organs and tissues can be
donated for transplant or scientific research.

• Q: What organs and tissues can I donate?
It is possible to donate as many different organs and tissues. Organs that can be donated for transplantation include, kidneys, heart,
lungs, liver, small bowel and pancreas. Tissues that can be donated include eyes, heart valves, bone, skin, veins and tendons.

• Q: How do I become a donor?
There are a few different steps you can take. First, sign up. Next, inform your family and others close to you that you’ve made the
decision to be donor. At the time of death, the family or next of kin will be consulted about organ donation. You can also add the words
“Organ Donor” to your driver’s license and complete a living will. Consult this page for complete details on becoming a donor.

• Q: If I have a previous medical condition, can I still donate?
Yes! Transplant professionals will evaluate the condition of your organs at the time of your death and determine if your organs are
suitable for donation. You should consider yourself a potential organ and tissue donor, indicate your intent to donate on your driver’s
license, donor card, or state donor registry, and discuss your decision with family members.

• Q: Will the medical or nursing care be changed because of my decision to be a donor?
No. The quality of you care will not change, regardless of your decision. Organ and tissue recovery takes place after all efforts to save
your life have been exhausted and death has been declared. The doctors involved in saving your life are entirely different from the
medical team involved in recovering organs and tissues.

• Q: Can I change my mind after I’ve registered to be a donor?
Yes. Inform your family that you have changed your mind. Contact the institution where you have registered, inform them about your
change in decision and fill in the necessary paperwork to have yourself de-registered as an organ donor.

• Q: Is there an age limit for donating organs?
No set age limit exists for organ donation. At the time of death, the potential donor’s organs are evaluated to determine their suitability for donation. Individuals in their 80s have successfully donated organs including liver and kidneys to save the lives of others. You must be 18 years of age to register. People of any age wishing to become organ and tissue donors should inform their families that they wish       to donate.

• Q: How do I discuss organ and tissue donation with my family?
Many people are uncomfortable talking about death. Explain to your loved ones how your decision to donate at the time of your death will offer hope to others whose lives can be saved or enhanced through transplantation.

• Q: What will happen to my donated organs and tissues?
A national system ensures the fair distribution of organs. The patients who will receive your organs will be identified based upon such  factors as blood type, length of time on the waiting list, severity of illness and other medical criteria. Factors not considered when matching donors with recipients include race, gender and ability to pay.

• Q: Can I donate organs to a friend or loved one awaiting a transplant?
Organ allocation guidelines allow families of donors to designate recipients, usually family members or friends. Mention this to the institute you are donating your organ to.

• Q: Does it cost anything to donate organs and tissues?
No, all costs related to the donation will be borne by the institute you register yourself with.

• Q: Will the identity of the recipients be revealed to the donor family?
No, the identity of both the donor and recipient must remain confidential by law. Basic information is provided to both recipients and donor families after the transplant. However, if both parties agree to disclose the identity of the donor and recipient, it must be done in the ambit of the law.
