CT Guided Procedures
Computed Tomography (CT) guided procedures are performed in the radiology department at Aditya Birla Memorial Hospital for diagnostic and therapeutic purpose. Procedures usually performed are
- CT guided biopsy
- CT guided FNAC
- CT guided drainage
These procedures are performed for the patients admitted in the hospital as well as on Outpatient basis. Using Computed Tomography to guide these procedures increases the precision and reduces the complication associated with these procedures. These are minimally invasive procedures leading to little procedure related morbidity. Using computed tomography ensures no major vessels or organs are injured during the procedure.
In some anatomical areas CT guided procedure has greater precedence, such as lung and bone biopsies. The radiologist depending upon the patient records and investigation reports decide when the procedure is best suited to be done under CT.
We follow the ALARA (as low as reasonably achievable) principle while carrying out CT scan guided procedures to ensure minimum required exposure of patients to the radiations. Information about pregnancy or possible pregnancy should be informed to the radiologist before undergoing the procedure.
For inpatients, a radiologist will examine the patient and investigation records including the radiology reports and then gives appointment to the patient for procedure. You will be transferred to the radiology department at the time of procedure by hospital nursing and transport staff. You may be asked to not eat or drink anything 2-3 hours before the procedure. After the procedures samples if any will be sent to pathology lab and you will be shifted to respective inpatient ward.
For outpatients, you will be admitted to daycare on arriving to the hospital. A radiologist will examine the patient and investigation records including the radiology reports and then gives appointment to the patient for procedure. You will be transferred to the radiology department at the time of procedure by hospital nursing and transport staff. You may be asked to not eat or drink anything 2-3 hours before the procedure. After the procedures samples if any will be sent to pathology lab and you will be shifted to day care ward. After observation period you will be discharged from the daycare on the same day. You may experience some soreness at the procedure site as the local anesthesia fades.
You can be asked to undergo certain laboratory investigations before undertaking the procedure to avoid any complications that may arise because of the co morbidities of the patient. You should discuss with the Interventional Radiologist about current medications of the patient. Patient may be advised to withhold certain medications and may be advised to consult the treating doctor of the patient for the same.
